Gift of You

What's the greatest gift you can give yourself?

People rave about a variety of things. While some are irresistibly obsessed with brands and big talk, others are quietly aware they cannot afford them or they'd rather not. Most are impeccably influenced by the trend. It is human psyche, more so Indian, to look up to things that the crowd endorse. This prominently applies to a large section of urban society's poor cousin- the suburbs. Anything upmarket or 'hep' ought to be desired. Even otherwise, the grass is always greener and thicker on the other side. Almost always. What could have well been a streak of luck for some becomes a prescribed algorithm for hundreds to follow. Well, I don't see anything particularly spectacular in it- So what dumb ass! Its for a reason that 'they' took to it!

The other section are the ones that are sadly weighed down by circumstances; those that don't understand the meaning of 'choice'; those that are bound by stereotype and have no imagination of things beyond. Programmed tastes and programmed choices. Little can be helped in their case. What could however make for an interesting observation, or not, is their response when exposed to choices plus the freedom to choose. That sure would be a real test of perception.

Few realize the luxury of having one's own mind. The pleasure involved in making one's choice, sticking by it despite seeing failure and the satisfaction of having no regrets drives them. That pleasure sadly eludes the others. In their attempts to seek momentary happiness, to satisfy social obligations and to just not leave anything to chance, they lose out on the most elementary requirement of personal happiness- knowing themselves and cherishing themselves. The greatest joy is in knowing that you are your own master and your own servant in everything you choose and everything you do.

YOU are the greatest gift you can give yourself.
